MEXICAN SUGAR – DALLAS UPTOWN

Overall Rating/Experience 9 out of 10…Will 100% Go Back!

MY EXPERIENCE

We made reservations on a Wednesday, midday for 7:15pm. It is a fancy/upscale Mexican food dining experience and could be a tequila lovers dream in their tasting room.  We show up a little early and thought we would have a cocktail at the bar; however, we were able to be seated early, so we just grabbed our first round of drinks from our server instead of the bar.  We were interested in Margaritas, so our server recommended 3 different ones for us.  Since it is 1 Million Degrees outside in Dallas at the moment, we all started with the “Chupa” Frozen Margarita. 10 out of 10 would recommend!  The Mango Puree, Lime, and Chamoy all play well together and gives the refreshing sweet sour combo you want and need from a frozen Marg!

While we were at the table, we scrolled through TikTok and saw what other people posted about and the Lobster Fundito kept popping up.  Of Course we had to test it out!  This is rich and decadent due to the combo of Cheese, Lobster and Butter with just a hint of garlic as to not overpower the Lobster.  Also, the homemade corn tortillas paired so well with the queso fundito!

It was time for round two of out drinks.  One of my friends chose the Marg Flight which allowed us to sample the Calssico, Hibiscus, and Machete (it’s almost like you get two full Margs with the total of the 3 samples).  Classico, it is what you expect out of a great traditional margarita—not too sweet, not too sour, and had a salt rim.  The Hibiscus, for me, was a little too sweet for me to want to order a full size margarita.  You could taste the hibiscus, so it wasn’t hidden by the alcohol.  I am a fan of Hibiscus tea and it had a nice floral flavor in the marg.  If you like sweeter drinks, you will love this one.  Machete, well, you could tell it had serrano for sure!  It wasn’t overpowering though as the watermelon and cucumber helps to tone down the heat.  It was more of a subtle heat.  I had the Grandioso, which is a slightly elevated version of the classico with Repaosado and Grand Marier and a spicy chile flake half rimmed glass.  This was our favorite Rocks style Marg.  I do not remember the name of my other friend’s second drink, but it was in a tall glass, it was greenish in color and had mint so I think it may have been the Caipirinha.  Whatever it was, it was tasty as well!

Since the Lobster Fundito was very rich/filling, we stuck to tacos and the salmon for dinner.  The grilled salmon was cooked perfectly to allow it to still be moist and not dried out.  The watercress and heirloom tomatoes also paired well with it and gave some freshness with each bite.  No one was a big fan of the tomatillo cumin broth that came with it though.  I’ll start with our least favorite taco and end with the winner of the night.  The Brasas Chicken tacos were very flavorful with the Fried Jalapeno and tamarind bbq, but came in 3rd for our taco battle.  Still very good but they have better options!  I would give these a 6 out of 10.  You won’t be disappointed, but you won’t be WOWED either.  The Fried Shrimp and Elote were up next.  The masa coating on the shrimp was very similar to a southern shrimp breading that you would normally see on a po’boy sandwich.  Very flavorful and tender juicy shrimp and not rubbery.  The elote came through to provide a slightly sweet fresh burst of flavor.  However, it was just a touch dry for us.  It needed a sauce.  I would recommend asking for a side of the lime crema pico that comes with the fish tacos to drizzle on top to make these a 10 out of 10.  Without the sauce, I would say they would be a 7 out of 10.  Finally, the winning dish of the entrees was the Pescado Tacos.  Grilled Stripe Bass, so you are not getting the run of the mill tilapia here!  You have rich and creamy flavors from the avocado spread, you get varied textures with the Jicama  slaw, acid to cut through the richness of the avocado from the vinaigrette and pickled onion, and the Chef’s Kiss topper that just made this taco was the Lime Crema Pico!  So flavorful! 100 out of 10 will order again.  All the tacos came with pinto beans and cilantro rice.  Both were very tasty, but you get better rice and beans from a local mom and pop Mexican restaurant.

Dinner came to a close with a serving of the Chocolate Avocado Cake!  This is something that you need to order.  I don’t care how full you are, you need to try this cake!  It had a chocolaty caramel base, then a dusting of seemed like a crushed up coconut cookie powder, and then that was finally topped with the Chocolate Avocado cake that was ultra moist and delicious—kinda between a brownie and a cake consistency.  It was finished off with a dusting of powdered sugar!  10 out of 10, this is a must order dessert!
